Sochi (Сочи), Russia was announced as the host city of the XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014 on July 4, 2007. In the final round, Sochi won over Pyeongchang (South Korea) and Salzburg (Austria). Pyeongchang (South Korea) was elected four years later as a host city of XXIII Olympic Winter Games 2018.

Ice Hockey in Olympic Sochi

XXII Olympic Winter Games will be celebrated from 7 to 23 February 2014.

Ice hockey matches will be played in Shayba Arena (Ледо́вая Аре́на) with 7 000 spectators and Bolshoy Ice Dome (Большой Ледовый дворец) with 12 000 spectators.

Main Tournament System

As in Vancouver 2010, the four teams with the best records (the winners of each group and the second-place team with the best record) advance to the quarter-finals and the remaining eight teams will play a qualification game.

Group Results

Ice hockey tournament was played in three groups, each with four teams. The final result are in three following tables. Winner of each group (United States, Canada and Sweden) secured place in the quater-finals, as well as the second-placed team with best record (Finland).

Quater-finals Results

United States, Canada, Sweden and Finland secured place in quater-finals directly from groups. The rest of the teams played qualification playoffs with following results

  • Russia won 4–0 over Norway
  • Slovenia won 4–0 over Austria
  • Latvia won 3–1 over Switzerland
  • Czech Republic won 5–3 over Slovakia

Matches in quater-finals

  • Finland won 3–1 over Russia
  • Sweden won 5–0 over Slovenia
  • Canada won 2–1 over Latvia
  • United States won 5–2 over Czech Republic

Semi-finals

  • Sweden won 2–1 over Finland
  • Canada won 1–0 over United States

Medal Games

  • Finland won 5–0 over United States in the bronze medal game. Teemu Selänne scored two goals in this game and this means that he achieved 25 goals totally in the Olympics and tied on the first place in the historical statistics Vladimír Zábrodský (Czechoslovakia) and Sven “Tumba” Johansson (Sweden).
  • Gold medal game: Canada vs. Sweden

Olympic Preliminary Qualification

Preliminary Qualification was played on 17–19 September 2012 in Croatia. Croatia, Mexico, Serbia and Israel competed for the one place in the Pre-qualification Tournament. The winner of this group was Croatia (9 points and score 30–6 in 3 matches).

Olympic Pre-Qualification

Olympic Pre-qualification was played on 8–11 November 2012. This round was divided into 3 groups, each containing 4 teams. The winner of each group advanced to the Final Olympic Qualification.

  • First group: Hungary, Netherlands, Lithuania and Croatia. Winner: Netherlands (8 points, score 24–10).
  • Second group: Ukraine, Poland, Estonia and Spain. Winner: Ukraine (9 points, score 22–1).
  • Third group: Great Britain, Japan, Romania and South Korea. Winner: Great Britain (7 points, score 9–6).

Olympic Qualification

Olympic Qualification round was played on 7–10 February 2013. As the previous round there was three groups, each containing 4 teams. The winner of each group will play on the main tournament in Sochi.

  • First group: Germany, Austria, Italy and Netherlands. Winner: Austria (7 points, score 11–6).
  • Second group: Latvia, France, Kazakhstan and Great Britain. Winner: Latvia (7 points, score 11–7).
  • Third group: Denmark, Belarus, Slovenia and Ukraine. Winner: Slovenia (9 points, score 12–4).
