Mario Lemieux – November 1

1995 – Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh Penguins) scored a goal and added six assists in 10-0 Pittsburgh Penguins win over the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning on November 1, 1995. However, this is not his record. Mario Lemieux scored 2 goals and added 6 assists on October 15, 1988 (St. Louis Blues vs. Pittsburgh Penguins 2-9). The overall NHL record holds Darryl Sittler (Toronto Maple Leafs) who scored 6 goals and added 4 assists on February 7, 1976.

Patrick Roy and Dominik Hašek – November 2

1996 – Patrick Roy (Colorado Avalanche) and Dominik Hašek (Buffalo Sabres) recorded shutout in the 0-0 tie game between Colorado Avalanche and Buffalo Sabres on November 2, 1996. For Patrick Roy, it was 33rd career shutout and for Dominik Hašek, it was 15th career shutout. These two goaltenders belong among the best goaltenders in the history of NHL. In total, Dominik Hašek has 81 shutouts in the regular seasons and 14 shutouts in the playoffs. Patrick Roy has 66 shutouts in the regular seasons and 23 shutouts in the playoffs.

Phil Esposito – November 3

1972 – Phil Esposito (Boston Bruins) scored 350th goal in the NHL in the 6-6 tie game between Boston Bruins and California Golden Seals (they played NHL in 1967-1976) on November 3, 1972.  Phil Esposito won Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972 with Boston Bruins. In his career, Phil Esposito scored 717 goals in regular season and 61 goals in playoffs.

San Jose Sharks – November 4

1998 – Dallas Stars recorded 21 shots at San Jose, while Sharks recorded only 9 shots on November 4, 1998. Still, 9 shots were enough to defeat Dallas Stars 4-0. This is the lowest amount of shots recorded by the winning team in the NHL history. Mike Vernon (San Jose Sharks) recorded his 19th career hattrick in this game.

Alexei Yashin – November 5

1973 – Alexei Yashin (Russia) was born on November 5, 1973. He played for Ottawa Senators and New York Islanders (12 seasons, 337 goals and 444 assists in regular seasons, 11 goals and 16 assists in playoffs). He left the NHL in 2007 and he started to play in Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, SKA St. Petersburg and CSKA Moskva. With Russia, Alexei Yashin won Olympic silver medal in Nagano (1998) and Olympic bronze medal in Salt Lake City (2002).

Bill Durnan – November 6

1948 – Bill Durnan (Montreal Canadiens) recorded 19th career shutout as Montreal Canadiens won 2-0 over Detroit Red Wings at home on November 6, 1948. Bill Durnan spend only 7 seasons in the NHL and still, he recorded 34 shutouts in regular seasons and 2 shutouts in playoffs. He became a Stanley Cup champion in 1944 and 1946. He won the Vezina Trophy in all years from 1944 to 1950 with only one exception in 1948. In the year 1964, Bill Durnan was introduced into the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame.

Patrick Thoresen – November 7

1983 – Patrick Thoresen (Norway) was born on November 7, 1983. Patrick Thoresen is only the fifth player from Norway to play a game in the NHL and he is the first player from Norway to play a playoff game. In the 2009-2010 he won Gagarin Cup in the KHL as a player of Slavat Yulaev Ufa and he was the best player of KHL in plus/minus statistics (+45). He is also the first Norwegian player to be named to the IIHF top division all star team – at the World Championship 2012. In 8 games at this championship, Thoresen collected 7 goals and 11 assists and he finished on the second place in points statistic. On the first place, there was Evgeni Malkin with 19 points (11+8) but he played two more games!

John Bower – November 8

1924 – John William Bower (Canada) was born on November 8, 1924 as John Kiszkan. John Bower is former NHL goaltender nicknamed “The China Wall“. In his career, he recorded 37 regular season shutouts and 5 playoffs shutouts. He won, as a player of Toronto Maple Leafs, 4 Stanley Cups in 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1967 (in 1967 he made a tandem with Terry Sawchuk). John Bower was elected to the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976.

Claude Provost – November 9

1957 – Claude Provost (Montreal Canadiens) scored the fastest goal from the start of a period in the whole NHL history. After only 4 seconds in the second period he scored a goal against Boston Bruins on November 9, 1957 (Montreal won this game 4-2). This is still the NHL record which was only once repeated by Denis Savard on January 12, 1986. Claude Provost won 9 times the Stanley Cup with Montreal Canadiens and still, he is not a member of NHL Hockey Hall of Fame (he is the only player among those who won 8 or more Stanley Cups who is not in the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame).

Terry Sawchuk – November 10

1963 – Terry Sawchuk (Detroit Red Wings) recorded 94th career shutout on November 10, 1963 and tied George Hainsworth as Detroit Red Wings won 3-0 over Montreal Canadiens in Detroit. Terry Sawchuk, 4-times Stanley Cup winner and member of NHL Hockey Hall of Fame, held record for shutouts in the NHL until 2009 when the record was taken by Martin Brodeur.

Harry Lumley – November 11

1926 – Harry Lumley (Canada) was born on November 11, 1926. Vezina Trophy winner (1954), Harry Lumley, won Stanley Cup in 1950 as a goaltender of Detroit Red Wings. In the year 1980, Harry Lumley was introduced to the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame. In his career, he recorded 71 shutouts in regular season games and 7 shutouts in playoffs.

Wayne Gretzky – November 12

1983 – Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton Oilers) scored his 20th career hat trick on November 12, 1983 as Edmonton Oilers won in Detroit 7-3. Wayne Gretzky recorded 50 career hat tricks during his career. It is NHL record.

Gilbert Perreault – November 13

1950 – Gilbert Perreault (Buffalo Sabres, Canada) was born on November 13, 1950. He spend all 17 NHL seasons in Buffalo Sabres. His number 11 was retired in his honour in Buffalo. He scored 512 regular season goals and 33 goals in playoffs. He also added 814 regular season assists and 70 assists in playoffs. Gilbert Perreault played for Team Canada in the 1972 Summit Series and in 1976 and 1981 he played for Canada in Canada Cup Series. In the 1981 Canada Cup, Perreault played with Wayne Gretzky and Guy Lafleur in one line. He was introduced to the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990.

Tom Barrasso – November 14

1998 – Tom Barrasso (Pittsburgh Penguins) recorded his 31st career shutout on November 14, 1998 as Pittsburgh Penguins won over visiting Florida Panthers 4-0. Tom Barrasso spend the majority of his career in Pittsburgh Penguins where he won 2 Stanley Cups (1991 and 1992). He won an Olympic silver medal with the team USA at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. In his NHL career, he achieved 38 shutouts in regular seasons and 6 in playoffs. He also won Calder Trophy (top rookie in the NHL) and Vezina Trophy (top goaltender in the NHL) in 1984.

Brett Hull – November 15

1987 – Brett Hull (Calgary Flames) scored his first career hat trick on November 15, 1987. He is son of Bobby Hull and they are the only father-son pair introduced to the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame. Brett Hull scored 741 regular season goals and picked up 650 assists. He added 102 goals and 87 assists in playoffs. Brett Hull is member of 50-goals club (i.e. 50 goals in first 50 matches in the season). Brett won 2 Stanley Cups (in 1999 and 2002) and he won an Olympic silver medal with the team USA at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

Steve Yzerman and Brett Hull – November 16

2001 – Spectators at Joe Louis Arena (Detroit) have seen Steve Yzerman (Detroit Red Wings) to score his 650th goal and Brett Hull (Minnesota Wild) to collect 1 200 points as Red Wings won 8-3 over Minnessota Wild on November 16, 2001.

Steve Yzerman – November 17

1990 – Steve Yzerman (Detroit Red Wings) recorded hat trick in the first 12 minutes of the game between Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at times 2:21, 10:53 and 11:59. This was really quick but the quickest hat trick in the history of the NHL was recorded in 1952 by Bill Mosienko on March 23, 1952. He scored in the third period at times 4:50, 5:02 and 5:10, i.e., in only 21 seconds! Watch Steve Yerman’s hat trick:

Mike Bossy – November 18

1980 – Mike Bossy (New York Islanders) recorder 12th career hat trick and 4th season hat trick on November 18, 1980. He spend his whole career in  NHL in New York Islanders and in the first 9 seasons (out of his 10 seasons) he scored more than 50 goals. This is still NHL record in most consecutive 50+ goal seasons. We recall that Wayne Gretzky scored more than 50 goals 9 times in his whole career. He won 4 Stanley Cups with New York Islanders in seasons 1979-80, 1980-81, 1981-82 and 1982-83.

Wayne Gretzky – November 19

1983 – Wayne Gretzky (Edmonton Oilers) recorded 8 points for 3 goals and 5 assists on November 19, 1983 as Edmonton Oilers won 13-4 over New Jersey Devils. The overall NHL record holds Darryl Sittler (Toronto Maple Leafs) who scored 6 goals and added 4 assists on February 7, 1976. After the match, Wayne Gretzky said about New Jersey Devils: “Well, it’s time they got their act together, folks. They’re ruining the whole league. They had better stop running a Mickey Mouse organization and put somebody on ice.”

John MacLean – November 20

1964 – John MacLean (Canada) was born on November 20, 1964. During his NHL career he recorded 413 goals and 429 assists in regular season games and 35 goals and 48 assists in playoffs. After the 1990-91 season (45 goals and 33 assists) John MacLean was forced to miss the following season due to a serious knee injury. In the year 1995 he won Stanley Cup as an alternate captain of New York Jersey.

Eddie Giacomin – November 21

1973 – Eddie Giacomin (New York Rangers) recorded second consecutive shutout as New York Rangers won 3-0 over the visiting California Golden Seals on November 21, 1973. In his NHL career, Ed Giacomin recorded 54 shutouts in regular season games and one shutout in playoffs. He is member of NHL Hockey Hall of Fame since the year 1987. His #1 was the second jersey retiered by the New York Rangers in 1989. We remind on this place that the longest continuous shutout by a goaltender is 461 minutes and 29 seconds and it is owned by Alec Connell (1927–28).

November 22 – Gilbert Perreault

1985 – Gillbert Perreault (Buffalo Sabres) scored hat trick in the third period within a span 4:01 as Buffalo Sabres won over visiting Quebec Nordiques 7-5 on November 22, 1985. He spend all 17 NHL seasons in Buffalo Sabres. His number 11 was retired in his honour in Buffalo. He scored 512 regular season goals and 33 goals in playoffs. He also added 814 regular season assists and 70 assists in playoffs. He was introduced to the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990.

November 23 – Wayne Gretzky

1988 – Wayne Gretzky (Los Angeles Kings) scored his 600th goal in the NHL on November 23, 1988 as Los Angeles King won in Detroit 8-3. To achieve this, he needed only 718 games. He also added five assists in this game. Wayne Gretzky became fifth player in the history of the NHL to score 600 goals. The others were Howe, Esposito, Dionne and Hull. In his whole NHL career, Wayne Gretzky scored 894 goals plus 122 goals in playoffs, i.e., 1016 goals! Watch him as he scored 600th goal.

November 24 – Keith Primeau

1971 – Keith Primeau (Canada) was born on November 24, 1971. He spent 15 seasons in the NHL and he was forced to end his career after nine games in the 2005-2006 season because of an injury. He scored 266 goals in the regular season games and 18 in playoffs. The most famous goal came on May 5, 2000 when he ended the longest game in the modern NHL history at the time 152:01, i.e., in the eight period of the game! Thanks to his goal Philadelphia Flyers won in Pittsburgh 2-1. There were only two longer games in the NHL and the longest game won Detroit Red Wings in Montreal (Maroons) 1-0 with the total play-time 176:30.

November 25 – Bill Mosienko

1954 – Bill Mosienko (Canada, Chicago Black Hawks) became the sixth player in the NHL history to score 250 goals as he scored once against visiting Montreal Canadiens on November 25, 1954 in his final NHL season. He spend all of his 14 seasons in Chicago and scored total 258 goals in regular seasons and 10 in playoffs. He holds record for the fastest hat trick in the whole NHL history.On March 23, 1952, Bill Mosienko scored in the third period at times 4:50, 5:02 and 5:10, i.e., in only 21 seconds!

November 26 – Chris Osgood

1972 – Chris “Ozzie” Osgood (Canada) was born on November 26, 1972. Ozzie is three time Stanley Cup winner in years 1997, 1998 and 2008 (all with Detroit Red Wings). He is also one of only five goaltenders who were able to score a goal by a shot. Ozzie scored a goal on March 6, 1996 against Hartford Whalers. The other four goaltenders who were able to score a goal are Ron Hextall (1987, 1989), Martin Brodeur (1997), Jose Theodore (2001) and Evgeni Nabokov (2002). In his 744 matches he recorded 50 shutouts and in 129 playoff matches he recorded 15 shutouts.

November 27 – Gordie Howe

1965 – Gordie Howe (Detroit Red Wings) scored as the first player in the NHL history 600th goal on November 27, 1965. In the NHL, Howe scored total 801 goals in regular season games and 68 goals in playoff. He won 4 Stanley Cups (1950, 1952, 1954 and 1955), all of them with Detroit. He is nicknamed Mr. Hockey and he is regarded as one of the best players in hockey history.

November 28 – Marc-André Fleury

1984 – Marc-André Fleury (Canada) was born on November 28, 1984. He is only the third goaltender in the NHL history who was drafted as the first choice (by Pittsburgh Penguins in 2003). The other two were Michel Plasse and Rick DiPietro. Marc-André Fleury won Olympic gold medal in Vancouver (2010) and Stanley Cup in 2009 with Pittsburgh Penguins.

November 29 – Tony Esposito

1968 – Tony Esposito (Canada) replaced Rogie Vachon in the match between Montreal Canadiens and Oakland Seals on November 29, 1968. It was first appearance of Tony ‘O’ in the NHL. In his second season, 1969-70, Tony Esposito (Chicago Black Hawks) recorder 15 shutouts and he still holds NHL record for most shutouts for rookie goaltender. He is known as Tony ‘O’, because of his record. Tony Esposito is member of the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame.

November 30 – Grant Fuhr

1995 – Grant Fuhr (St. Luis Blues) became 11th goaltender in the NHL history who reached 300 career victories on November 30, 1995. In 2003 he was introduced to the NHL Hall of Fame.
