Tom Barrasso – January 5

1999 – Tom Barrasso (Pittsburgh Penguins) became the highest scoring goaltender in the NHL history on January 5, 1999 as he picked up two assists in a game against Calgary Flames. Tom Barrasso spend the majority of his career in Pittsburgh Penguins where he won 2 Stanley Cups (1991 and 1992). He won an Olympic silver medal with the team USA at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

1973 – Tony Esposito (Chicago Black Hawks) recorded his 35th career shutout on January 6, 1973. Tony Esposito (Chicago Black Hawks) recorded 15 shutouts and he still holds NHL record for most shutouts for rookie goaltender. He is known as Tony ‘O’, because of his record. Tony Esposito is member of the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame.

Bert Olmstead – January 9

1954 – Bert Olmstead (Montreal Canadiens) scored 4 goals and added 4 assists to collect 8 points in one game on January 9, 1954. Only 11 other players in the whole NHL history were able to collect exactly the same amount of points in one game. The record for most points in one game holds Darryl Sittler for his incredible 6 goals and 4 assists on February 7, 1976. Bert Olmstead was introduced into the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985.

1920 – Newsy Lalonde (Montreal Canadiens) scored 6 goals in one game on January 10, 1920. He is among 7 players in the NHL history who were able to score 6 goals in one game. Only one player was able to score more goals. On January 31, Joe Malone scored 7 goals in one game.

Jaromír Jágr – January 11

2003 – Jaromír Jágr (Pittsburgh Penguins) scored his 10th career hat trick and added 4 assists in a 12-2 win against the visiting Florida Panthers.

Frederick Arthur Stanley and Tim Young – January 15

1841 – Frederick Arthur Stanley (or Lord Stanley of Preston) was born on January 15, 1841. In 1982, Lord Stanley donated the famous Stanley Cup for the best amateur hockey club in Canada. Since 1926, only NHL teams compete for the trophy.

1979 – Tim Young (Minnesota North Stars) scored 5 goals in one game on January 15, 1979 as Minnesota won 8-1 over New York Rangers in New York.

Frank Zamboni – January 16

1901 – Frank Zamboni (United States) is an Italian-American inventor. His most famous invention is an ice resurfacer. He invented the ice resurfacer in 1949 and obtained patent four years later. On January 16, 2013, Google changed its logo for a day to remember Frank Zamboni. As of 2013, more than 10 000 Zamboni ice resurfaceres were sold.

Jacques Plante – January 17

1929 – Jacques Plante (Canada) was born on January 17, 1929 in Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Karmel, Canada. Jacques Plante is one of the best goaltenders in the history of hockey. He is the first goaltender who wore a goaltender mask on regular basis, since 1959-60 season. Jacques Plante developed and tested many masks. He recorded 82 shutouts in regular season games and his team won 434 times out of 837 games, i.e., 52%. He won Stanley Cups 6 times, Vezina Trophy 7 times, he is member of NHL Hockey Hall of Fame, Canada Sports Hall of Fame, Montreal Canadiens retiered his jersey #1, etc. As it is said in the video bellow, he changed the hockey!

Mark Messier – January 18

1961 – Mark Messier (Canada) was born on January 18, 1961 in Canada. He is one of greatest hockey players in the NHL history. Only Wayne Gretzky was able to collect more points than Mark Messier. In his career, he was won 6 Stanley Cups. He was introduced to the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007. His number 11 was retired by New York Rangers and by Edmonton Oilers. Martin Brodeur and Jaromír Jágr – January 19

1994 – Martin Brodeur (New Jersey Devils) recorded his second NHL shutout on January 19, 1994. He is one of best goaltenders in the whole NHL histrory. Martin Brodeur spent all his career in New Jersey Devils. As of 2013, he colected 119 regular season shutouts and 24 playoffs shutouts; both are NHL records. He holds record for most regular season wins by a goaltender (as of 2013 he won 656 matches). He also won 3 Stanley Cups with New Jersey Devils (1995, 2000, 2003), two Olympic gold medals with Canada (2002 Salt Lake City, 2010 Vancouver) and World Cup 2004. Martin Brodeur also scored a goal (by a shot, not own goal credited to the goaltender).

2013 – Jaromír Jágr (Dallas Stars) scored his 666th and 667th goals in his first match for Dallas Stars on January 19, 2013. He also added 2 assists and Dallas Stars won 4-3 over Phoenix Coyotes.

1989 – Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh Penguins) scored his 50th goal of the season on the January 20, 1989 and he became just the second player in the NHL history to score 50 goals in less than 50 games. Boston Bruins – January 21

1945 – Boston Bruins set a record for the fastest four goals scored by one team. Bill Thoms (26:34), Frank Mario (27:08 and 27:27) and Ken Smith (27:54) scored within a span of 1:20 in the second period and helped Boston to win over the visiting New York Rangers.

Mike Bossy – January 22

1957 – Mike Bossy (New York Islanders) was born on January 22, 1957. He spend his whole career in the NHL in New York Islanders and in the first 9 seasons (out of his 10 seasons) he scored more than 50 goals. This is still NHL record in most consecutive 50+ goal seasons. We recall that Wayne Gretzky scored more than 50 goals 9 times in his whole career. He won 4 Stanley Cups with New York Islanders in seasons 1979-80, 1980-81, 1981-82 and 1982-83.

1998 – Dominik Hašek (Buffalo Sabres) recorded his 150th career victory in the NHL on January 23, 1998. Dominik Hašek is one of the best goaltenders in the history of ice hockey and he earned the nickname The Dominator.

1965 – Esa Tikkanen (Finland) was born on January 25, 1965. Tikkanen won 5 Stanley Cups in his NHL career; 4 of them as a player of Edmonton Oilers and one as a player of New York Rangers.

Ivan Hlinka – January 26

1950 – Ivan Hlinka (Czechoslovakia, Czech Republic) was born on January 1950. As a player, Hlinka won 3 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals on World Championships and 1 silver and 1 bronze medal on Olympic Games. As a coach, he added 1 gold and 4 bronze medals on World Championships and gold medal from Nagano 1998, Tournament of the Century. Ivan Hlinka was introduced into the IIHF Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002. Two years later, Hlinka died in a car accident. In his career, Hlinka was allowed by the Czechoslovak authorities to play in the NHL and later, Hlinka became the second European coach in the NHL (in Pittsburgh Penguins).

Harry Hyland – January 27

1913 – Harry Hyland (Montreal Wanderers) scored EIGHT goals on January 27, 1913 in the NHA game (the ancestor league of NHL). Later, Hyland played two seasons in the NHL and in 1962, Hyland was introduced into the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame. NHL record for most goals in one game is hold by Joe Malone. Malone scored 7 goals on January 31, 1920.

Terry Sawchuk – January 28

1968 – Terry Sawchuk (Los Angeles Kings) recorded his first shutout as a player of Los Angeles Kings on January 28, 1968. It was Sawchuk’s 101st shutout in his career. Terry Sawchuk, 4-times Stanley Cup winner and member of NHL Hockey Hall of Fame, held record for most shutouts in the NHL until 2009 when the record was taken from him by Martin Brodeur.

Ron Francis – January 29

2001 – Ron Francis (Carolina Hurricanes) became the 5th player in the NHL history to collect 1600 points on January 29, 2001. During his career, Ron Francis collected 1798 points for 549 goals and 1249 assists. In playoffs, Francis added 143 points for 46 goals and 97 assists.

Peter Šťastný – January 30

1991 – Peter Šťastný (New Jersey Devils) scored his 400th goal in the NHL on January 30, 1991. At the time, he was just the 32nd player in the NHL to score 400 or more goals. Šťastný is the first player in the history who represented 3 countries on three tournamenst – Czechoslovakia, Canada and Slovakia. In 1998, Peter Šťastný was introduced into the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame.

Joe Malone – January 31

1920 – Joe Malone (Quebec Bulldogs) set a record for most goals in one game on January 31, 1920. It is were unlikely that Joe Malone’s goal will be broken while he scored 7 goals in one game. Quebec Bulldogs won over Toronto St. Patricks 10-6. Malone is member of NHL Hockey Hall of Fame and three-times Stanley Cup Champion (1912, 1913 and 1920).
