1997 – Montreal Canadiens became the first NHL team to attend 5 000 games on December 1, 1997. Since 1917, Montreal Canadiens won 2 625 games, tied 772 games and loosed 1 603 games.

Denis Potvin – December 2
1986 – Denis Potvin (New York Islanders) reached, as the first defenseman in the NHL history, 700 assists on December 2, 1986. Denis Potvin spent his whole career in the New York Islanders and won 4 times Stanley Cup (1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983). In 1991, he was introduced to the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame and in 1992 New York Islanders retired his jersey #5.

Pavel Bure – December 3
2002 – Pavel Bure, or The Russian Rocket (New York Rangers) scored his 20th and final career hat trick on December 3, 2002. He is also well known for his 5-goal-game in Nagano (1998) Olympics semi-final game.

Terry Sawchuk – December 4
1958 – Terry Sawchuk (Detroit Red Wings) recorded his 74th career shutout on December 4, 1958 as Detroit Red Wings won 4-0 ower Boston Bruins. Terry Sawchuk, 4-times Stanley Cup winner and member of NHL Hockey Hall of Fame, held record for most shutouts in the NHL until 2009 when the record was taken by Martin Brodeur.

Harry Lumley – December 5
1953 – Harry Lumley (Toronto Maple Leafs) recorded his 44th career shutout on December 5, 1953. Vezina Trophy winner (1954), Harry Lumley, won Stanley Cup in 1950 as a goaltender of Detroit Red Wings. In the year 1980, Harry Lumley was introduced to the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame. In his career, he recorded 71 shutouts in regular season games and 7 shutouts in playoffs.

Sandis Ozolinsh – December 6
1999 – Sandis Ozolinsh (Sandis Ozoliņš, Colorado Avalanche) scored his first career hat trick on December 6, 1999. This Latvian defenceman won the Stanley Cup with Colorado Avalanche in 1996. Watch one of his best goals ever in

Jari Kurri – December 7
1988 – Jari Kurri (Edmonton Oilers) scored his 20th career hat trick on December 7, 1988 as Edmonton Oilers won 8-3 over the visiting Quebec Nordiques. Jarri Kurri is 5-times Stanley Cup winner (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1990). He won all his Stanley Cups with Edmonton Oilers where he spend most seasons of his NHL career. Rogie Vachon – December 8
1973 – Rogie Vachon (Los Angeles Kings) recorded his 19th shutout out of his 51 regular season shutouts On December 8, 1973. He is known for his great reflexes. Rogie Vachon won 3 Stanley Cups (1968,1969, 1971), all with Montreal Canadiens. In 1976, he, helped Canada to win Canada Cup.

Petr Nedvěd – December 9
1971 – Petr Nedvěd (Czech Republic, Canada) was born on December 9, 1971 in the Czech Republic. In 1989, ten months before the Velvet Revolution in the Czech Republic, he decided to defect to Canada. In 1993, Petr Nedvěd obtained Canadian citizenship and in 1994 he helped Canada with 5 goals to the Olympic silver medal in Lillehammer. In 2012, he represented his born country, the Czech Republic, in the Ice Hockey World Championship. He was 40 years old and still, it was his debut on the Ice Hockey Word Championship. He helped with three goals to the bronze medal.

Martin Brodeur – December 10
2003 – Martin Brodeur (New Jersey Devils) recorded his 70th career shutout on December 10, 2003. He is one of best goalies in the whole NHL histrory. Martin Brodeur spent all his career in New Jersey Devils. As of 2012, he colected 119 regular season shutouts and 24 playoffs shutouts; both are NHL records. He holds record for most regular season wins by a goaltender (as of 2012 he won 656 matches). He also won 3 Stanley Cups with New Jersey Devils (1995, 2000, 2003), two Olympic gold medals with Canada (2002 Salt Lake City, 2010 Vancouver) and World Cup 2004. Tom Bladon – December 11
1977 – Tom Bladon (Philadelphia Flyers) recorded 8 points for 4 goals and 4 assists on December 11, 1977. This is still a record for most points in one game by a defenceman (equaled only once in the history by Paul Coffey). His +10 points is also highest +/- record by a player in the history.
Bobby Hull – December 12
1971 – Bobby Hull (Chicago Black Hawks) became the fifth player in the NHL history to reach 1000 career points on December 12, 1971. Bobby Hull is the first NHL player who scored more than 50 goals in one season (on March 12, 1966) and third player in the history of NHL who was able to score 50 goals in one season (the first one was Maurice Richard, The Rocket, in season 1944-45 and the second one was Bernie Geoffrion, Boom Boom, in season 1960-61).

1970 – Bobby Orr (Boston Bruins) recorded his 300th point in the NHL on December 13, 1970. Bobby Orr is considered as one of the best player in the history.

Marcel Dionne – December 14
1982 – Marcel Dionne (Los Angeles Kings) became the 9th player in the history of NHL to score 500 goals on December 14, 1982. He was introduced to the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992. In his career, he scored 731 goals and added 1040 assists in regular season and 21 goals and 24 assists in playoffs. With 731 goals, Marcel Dionne is 4th in goals (after Wayne Gretzky – 894, Gordie Howe – 801 and Brett Hull – 741).

Cecil “Tiny” Thompson – December 15
1932 – Cecil “Tiny” Thompson (Boston Bruins) recorded his 30th career shutout on December 15, 1932. He is four-time Vezina Trophy winner and he was introduced to the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in 1959. In his career, Tiny Thompson recorded 81 regular season shutouts and 7 playoffs shutouts. In the year 1929, he won his only Stanley Cup with Boston Bruins.
Olaf Kölzig – December 16
2000 – Olaf Kölzig (Washington Capitals, Germany) recorded his 19th career shutout on December 16, 2000. Olaf Kölzig was born in South Africa and grew up in Canada. Chuck Rayner – December 17
1952 – Chuck Rayner (New York Rangers) recorded his 25th, and final, shutout on December 17, 1952. He is member on NHL Hockey Hall of Fame.
Ken Dryden – December 18
1977 – Ken Dryden (Montreal Canadiens) recorded his 39th career shutout on December 18, 1977. Ken Dryden is 6-time Stanley Cup champion (1971, 1973, 1976-1979), all with Montreal Canadiens. In his 397 regular season games, Ken Dryden recorded 46 shutouts! In 1983, he was introduced to the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame.

Dennis Hull – December 19
1964 – Dennis Hull (Chicago Black Hawks) scored his first career goal in the NHL on December 19, 1964. His older brother added in the same match two goals and two assists. Dennis Hull is an uncle of Brett Hull and Bart Hull. In his NHL career, he scored 303 regular season goals and added 351 assists.
Doug Smail – December 20
1981 – Doug Smail (Winnipeg Jets) is famous thanks to his goal 5 seconds after the start of the game on December 20, 1981. This is still the fastest goal from the start of the period. It was twice equalled – by Bryan Trottier on March 22, 1984 and by Alexander Mogilny on December 21, 1991. This is video of Bryan Trottier:

Alexander Mogilny – December 21
1991 – Alexander Mogilny (Buffalo Sabres) scored the fastest goal from the start of the period on December 21, 1991. He needed only 5 seconds of the play. It was for the third time in the history of NHL when someone scored a goal just 5 seconds from the start of the period. The first was Doug Smail (December 20, 1981) and the second was Bryan Trottier (March 22, 1984).

Bobby Orr – December 22
1974 – Bobby Orr (Boston Bruins) recorder his 800th career point on December 22, 1974. He is considered as one of the best ice hockey players in the NHL history. In plus-minus statistics he recorded +597 and it is more than Wayne Gretzky. The only better career high achieved Larry Robinson +730.

Paul Coffey – December 23
1999 – Paul Coffey (Carolina Hurricanes) became the first NHL defenceman who recorded 1500 career points on December 23, 1999. Paul Coffey holds record for most goals in one season by a defenceman – 48 goals in 1985-86 season.

Georges Vézina – December 25
1924 – Georges Vézina (Montreal Canadiens) recorded his 10th shutout on December 25, 1924. He was the first NHL goaltender to record a shutout and first NHL goaltender to record an assist. NHL Hockey Hall of Fame was established in 1945 and Joseph Georges Gonzague Vézina was one of the original nine inductees.Vezina trophy is awarded since the 1925-26 season to the most outstanding goaltender.
Mike Gartner – December 26
1993 – Mike Gartner (New York Rangers) became the sixth player in the NHL history to score 600 goals on December 26, 1993. In his NHL career, he scored 708 goals in regular season games and 43 goals in playoffs. Since 2001, Mike Gartner is member of the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame.

Mike Bossy – December 27
1979 – Mike Bossy (New York Islanders) scored his 7th career hat trick on December 27, 1979. He spend his whole career in the NHL in New York Islanders and in the first 9 seasons (out of his 10 seasons) he scored more than 50 goals. This is still NHL record in most consecutive 50+ goal seasons. We recall that Wayne Gretzky scored more than 50 goals 9 times in his whole career. He won 4 Stanley Cups with New York Islanders in seasons 1979-80, 1980-81, 1981-82 and 1982-83.

Raymond Bourque – December 28
1960 – Raymond Bourque (Canada) was born on December 28, 1960. He spend most of his career in Boston Bruins and in 1612 regular season matches scored 410 goals and collected 1169 assists. Both are NHL records for a defenceman. He won one Stanley Cup in the 2000/2001 season with Colorado Avalanche and two Canadian Cups in 1984 and 1987.

Nels Stewart – December 29
1902 – Nels Stewart (Canada) was born on December 28, 1902. Nels Stewart holds a record for the fastest two goals in one game by one player. On January 3, 1931, Nels Stewart scored two goals within a span of 4 seconds. He is member of the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame since 1952.
Gump Worsley – December 30
1967 – Gump Worsley (Canada) recorded 33rd career shut out on December 30. Gump Worsley won 4 times Stanley Cup with Montreal Canadiens (1965, 1966, 1968 and 1969). He was one of the last goaltenders to play without a mask.

Mario Lemieux – December 31
1988 – Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh Penguins) scored 5 goals and added 3 assists on December 31, 1988. He was able to make this incredible performance 3 times in his career (October 15, 1988; December 31, 1988; April 25, 1989), all in one season.
